Chroniclers thought the rite worth a separate entry. Under the year 1192, the Laurentian Chronicle records the first-haircut rite of Yuri, son of Grand Prince Vsevolod, held in Suzdal, and notes that the boy was set on a horse the same day. The rite was held not right after birth but at three or four years old or later, and the boy was brought to church by his godfather.
Echoes of the rite lived on in folk tradition. In many regions a child’s first haircut was done on the first birthday: the child was seated on a sheepskin coat and the godfather snipped a little hair in the shape of a cross. Today the barber holds the scissors, but the meaning is the same: a boy does something “grown-up” next to an older man — only now it is a habit repeated every month.
Fun fact. A similar rite is still alive in Jewish tradition — the upsherin. A boy’s hair is not cut until he turns three, and on his third birthday there is a celebration where guests take turns snipping a lock. Afterwards the child wears a kippah for the first time and starts learning the alphabet.

Who it suits and how to choose matching cuts
Age. The Kids’ Haircut at Lumberjack is for boys under 12. We cut toddlers too, as long as the child is calm about the process, so you can plan your boy’s first barbershop haircut as soon as his hair starts getting in the way. From 12, your son moves on to the Men’s Haircut — and you are on the same price list.
Hair type. A matching cut is easiest when the hair is similar: both straight, both thick. If dad’s hair is coarse and dense and the boy’s is fine and soft, the barber will leave the son a bit more length on top — the shape reads the same even though the millimetres differ. Show curls and cowlicks to the barber before you start.
Face shape. A child’s face is rounder than an adult’s, so the same silhouette looks different on it. Volume on top lengthens the face, a fringe shortens it. The barbers adjust proportions for each of you, so the pair looks like one idea rather than two copies.

The older one has a smoothly shaved head, the younger one short, lively curls. Nobody would call these cuts matching, and that is their charm: each wears what suits his hair. The younger one’s curls are left natural, with only the outline trimmed above the ears and on the neck so the head looks neat.

1. Getting to know you. The barbers talk to both of you: they look at hair and cowlicks, ask what cut the boy wants and how short you are happy to go. Right there you decide — matching, one style, or each his own.
2. Dad first — if you like. If it is the boy’s first time in a barber’s chair, you can go first: he will see what it looks like and sit down knowing what to expect.
3. The haircut. The barber explains to the boy what he is doing and shows him the tools. If the child needs a pause, agree on a “break” signal with the barber.
4. Finish. Styling, a mirror, a before-and-after photo if you want one. Finally, the barber tells you how to keep the shape at home and when to come back for a touch-up.
Scissors, combs and guards are mechanically cleaned, disinfected and sterilised in sealed containers, disposable blades are used once, and the station is sanitised after every guest.

Matching haircuts for father and son: what to choose
Crop. The easiest way to match. Short sides, a textured top, the fringe pushed forward: dad wears it with a fade, the boy with a soft clipper taper. It falls into place by itself and needs no styling before school.
Caesar. Even shorter, with a straight horizontal fringe. It suits boys with cowlicks above the forehead and dads whose hair is thinning at the front.
Boxer cut. The “short and clean” classic: clippers on the sides, a little length on top. A practical choice for sport and summer, and for dad a cut that still looks neat in its third week.
