What is a fade haircut
A fade is a men’s haircut in which the hair on the sides and back “fades” smoothly from skin or 0–1 mm at the bottom to the length on top, with no visible line. The fade is a blending technique, so it works with any top: a crop, a quiff, a slick back or short texture.

A fade is more a technique than a hairstyle of its own. That is why it goes with any top: a short crop, a voluminous quiff, a slick back or texture you style with your fingers in a minute.
The type of fade depends on where the blend starts. A low fade begins below the ear and keeps more length on the sides. A mid fade starts halfway up the temple and is the most versatile option. A high fade climbs almost to the crown line for a sharp, bold contrast.
A skin fade (also called a bald fade) is any of these with the shortest zone shaved down to the skin. And a fade differs from a taper in scale: a taper only shortens the hair gently along the hairline at the temples and neck, while a fade runs all the way round the head and goes higher.
The secret of a clean fade is the hand, not the clipper. The barber works with several guards and gradually blurs the lines between them until not a single step is left. That is what separates a neat haircut from one with visible “floors” on the back of the head.

But it was the electric clipper that let barbers take length down to nothing quickly and evenly: in October 1919 Leo Wahl of Sterling, Illinois, applied for patents on a clipper with the motor right in the handle, and by the end of 1920 his factory had sold thousands.
Short sides and a longer top is an old idea. In the Roman Empire “short back and sides” was the regulation haircut for legionaries: practical, hygienic and hard for an enemy to grab.
Technically, though, the fade grew out of the electric clipper. In October 1919 Leo J. Wahl of Sterling, Illinois, applied for patents on an electromagnetic clipper with the motor right in the handle. By the end of 1920 his factory had sold thousands of them to barbers all over the United States.
History of the fade haircut
Sides and back shaved to the skin with a smooth blend into a longer top were made standard by the military — in the US armed forces the cut is known as the high and tight. US Air Force rules still require a haircut to have a tapered appearance on both sides and the back of the head.
In the late 1980s young Black Americans picked up the high military blend, and barbershops turned it into an art form. The hi-top fade — short sides with a tall, flat column of hair on top — peaked between 1984 and 1993, worn by Big Daddy Kane, Bobby Brown, the duo Kid ’n Play and Will Smith in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Fun fact. In 1988 the rap group Ultramagnetic MCs called this cut the “cameo cut”, after the musicians of the funk band Cameo led by Larry Blackmon, who wore similar tall flat tops. Barbers’ names for haircuts sometimes came straight out of songs.

Who a fade haircut suits
Face shape. A fade adapts to the face through the height of the blend. Round and wide faces suit a mid or high fade with volume on top: short sides visually slim the face, the top adds height. Narrow and long faces do better with a low fade — the length on the sides keeps the silhouette from stretching further. Oval and square faces are the easiest: any height works.
Hair type. A fade looks sharpest on thick hair, where the contrast between skin and top is at its maximum. On curly hair it removes bulk from the sides and leaves the curls on top. If your hair is fine or thin, the barber will suggest a shorter textured top and a lower blend.
Age and style. Fades are worn by schoolboys, students and men who have run their own business for years. A low fade with a neat side part passes any office dress code; a high or skin fade with texture is the choice for the gym, the stage and weekends. And if you wear a beard, the blend at the temples runs smoothly into it for a complete look. A fade is just as at home at a client meeting as on a football pitch — which is why it is so often requested by men with no time for complicated styling.
When to think twice. Not ready to see your barber every few weeks? Go for a low fade or a taper: they grow out more softly. If you have scars on the back of your head or sensitive skin, ask your barber whether to go down to the skin — it is a normal question for the consultation before the cut.

Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo as needed, and if you style daily, rinse the product out in the evening. Leftover styling on short sides makes hair look heavy and flat. Don’t rub with a towel — pat dry and finish with a blow-dryer on a medium setting.

Fade vs undercut: what’s the difference
Fade and undercut are often confused, since both have short sides and a longer top. The difference is the transition. In a fade the length changes smoothly, with no line. In an undercut the sides are cut to one length and the top hangs sharply over them — the line is visible at once, and that is its whole character.
Fade vs crop. A crop is a shape of the top: short texture with a straight fringe line on the forehead. A fade is a technique for the sides. So they don’t compete, they complement each other: a crop with a fade is one of the most common requests in the chair.
Fade vs pompadour. A pompadour is a tall, voluminous slick back that relies on a long top. The modern pompadour is most often done with a fade on the sides to emphasise the height.
