1. Consultation. The barber looks at your face shape, density, growth direction and cowlicks, and asks how many minutes you are ready to spend on styling. This is where the length is decided.

2. Frame. First the sides and back are set — with clippers for a fade or scissor-over-comb for a soft line.

3. Top. Section by section with scissors, using a guide length from the forehead to the crown. For layered and shag cuts the hair is cut in layers.
